24 - Season 3

Writing by shinda on Tuesday, 28 of February , 2006

During the reading week, having some time to spare, I thought it be a good time to watch season 3 of 24. For those of you who have never watched this show, and really do value your time, don’t watch it, because like a bag of Lay’s chips, I bet you can’t watch just one (episode at a time).

Anyways I finished watching season 3 last night, so like with the previous two seasons I thought I’d rant about it.

Now the rest of this is a spoiler so doesn’t bother reading on, if you do plan on watching it. Also I thought it would make more sense to put the fine print at the top instead of the bottom so that you can actually read it before you continue on.

Disclaimer
Many of you may be offended by the following. Many of you will read this and wonder why you just read it. If you value your time, don’t bother reading on. If you have never heard of 24, then the following will be nothing more then babble, which has no meaning or purpose. Reading the below, will in no way get you mukhti let alone inspire you into Sikhi. If anything the following may be detrimental to your jeevan, as you would have wasted many breaths that you could have spent more productively reading Bani or studying. If you feel this disclaimer itself have been a huge waste of your time, then by no means should you continue reading any further as the rest of this post is filled with similar nonsense. If you are offended by jokes made about females, don’t have a sense of humor or are just overall a pain, then you are asked not to continue reading. By continuing to read you agree to the above terms and will not message me telling me that I wasted your time. Thank you.

I’m not sure if I liked this season more then season 2. I don’t think it was near as suspenseful although it took just as many twists and turns. The fact that Nina made an appearance was probably the most shocking, considering I thought she was long gone, but I doubt we’ll be seeing any more of her.Unlike other seasons the females in the show really redeemed themselves from the stupidity rep that they had developed in previous seasons. The Most Improved Female Award goes to Kim Bauer. Not only did Kim seem to be a little smarter this time, she didn’t cause near as much trouble as she did in previous seasons. Although she is still proving most blonde stereotypes to hold true, she didn’t directly get anyone killed this time. Actually she did mess up when Chase told her about going after her father, but then again she did come clean to Tony about it later so all in all, good job Kim.Smartest Female Award, goes to……this was a really tough one, and I think this maybe a new category for this season considering the past few seasons most the females on the show, proved themselves to be incredibly stupid. The candidates are, Nina Myers, Sherry Palmer, and off course Michelle Dessler. Taking all things into consideration I’d have to give this one to Michelle. Main reason, she made it out alive. Her going into the hotel after knowing she could have died only goes to gives her points here, but really the fact that she got away from Saunders and the way she did, really made her stand out from the rest. Good job Michelle.

Most Evil Female Award goes to….another tough one. This one is between either Sherry Palmer, or Nina Myers.

Nina Myers is just plain evil, but then again she’s like the female version of Jack. The way she faked suicide then killed all the medical staff and got away, was just brilliant, yet the gruesome deaths she bestowed on the med staff, was just plain evil. But Sherry, wow. I guess President Palmer was right, she is just a shark. Watching Milken die slow in front of her and not even flinching, then not even a minute later making up an alibi. But what really topped it off, was when she turned on President Palmer himself and tried to blackmail her way back into his life, after potentially killing his political career, evil, just evil.

Congratulations Sherry, your season 3’s recipient of the Most Evil Female award.

Most Annoying Female award…Being that we can only award one, Stupid Female of the Season award, I decided to make this category specifically for Chloe O’Brian. Now, it wouldn’t be fair to label her stupid, considering how ill she was, when dealing with the worm virus, and all her other technical skills, but I think there were multiple times in this season where I felt like telling her to SHUT UP!. Her random comments, by the book attitude were just plain out annoying. Just thinking back gives me the shivers, congratulations Chloe you’re this year’s recipient.

And now ladies and gentlemen we have come to the award most of you have been waiting for.

The candidates for this season’s Stupid Female Award are, Anne Packard, Julia Milliken, and Claudia Salazar.

Anne Packard
You can admire her convictions to doing what’s right and noble and all that, but let’s not forget her naïve ways almost hurt President Palmer’s campaign. I guess you could say, he was saved by the terrorist attack. Also for going over to her ex-husbands place without asking anyone first and knowing everything going on with him, could have been potentially disastrous. However, I’ll give it to Anne for knowing that she messed up, and just leaving the scene.

Julia Milliken
So what, if Julia’s a gold digger, you can’t really hold that against her. What I will hold against her though is the whole suicide murder. Why not just relax and think things through. Oh yea, I forgot, YOUR STUPID!! Chullo, I won’t go into further details about her, she was just dumb.

Claudia Salazar
I admire her convictions and bravery to get out alive. Heck, I was even sad to see her die, the way she did, but come on now, you know you could have handled the situation better. I guess it’s unfair to put her in this category, but alas I already typed it up, and don’t feel like pressing backspace or delete, so we’ll just continue on.

So this years winner is…(drum roll please)…Julia Milken. Not only did she complicate things for everyone, she also ended her own life. Good job Julia. I’m glad that you’re one face we won’t have to see ever again.

And that ladies and gentlemen is a wrap. We thank you for, whatever reason you had, to read through all this. We apologize but your time is non refundable and well yes that is that.

A Glimmer of Hope..

Writing by shinda on Monday, 27 of February , 2006

What’s been speculated, rumored, and hoped for has been today confirmed. Yes ladies and gentlemen, the Toronto Raptors have signed new GM, now ex-Phoenix Suns GM Bryan Colangelo.

The same man who helped build and rebuild the Suns into the monster team in the West that they are now, will hopefully be able to do the same for the Raptors.

Does this mean we can sleep easy now, and work at getting over the nightmares inflicted on us by the mishaps caused during the Babcock era? I would hope so. Finally we got a decent GM since Grunwald, (For those against him, just remember who he helped bring to the team, or was that Isaiah?)

Anyways, with a decent GM in place, I think the fans of Toronto can take refuge in knowing, that things may just be getting better from here on in. But then again as usual, I may just be getting ahead of myself here. Ah well, that I guess is to be expected.

For more info check the following sources:

Tukh of the day..

Writing by shinda on Friday, 24 of February , 2006

I was procrastinating as usual and so I was going through some sites and came across the following tukh from Sri Dasam Granth Sahib:

??????? ?????? ???????? ??????? ????? ??????? ? ??????? ?????? ????? ?? ?????? ??????? ??????? ????
The friendship of a queer type will wash and destroy the sanctity of friendship; the friends and enemies will go together for their self-interest.26.
(Rest of the Shabad can be read here)
It be nice if that tukh was enough to end the whole gay sikh debate, but sadly enough it’ll probably only get more people to reject Bani from Sri Dasam Granth.Anyhow, check out the Shabad, pretty interesting considering the way Guru Sahib describes the depth and details of Kaljug, seems like many of those things have come to pass, or are passing.

Also the tukhs on religion and lack of it in people and the whole Gurudom’s popping up every 4 days, reminded me a lot about India, and current rate that Sants and Nakli Guru’s are popping up.

Canadian Sikh or Sikh Canadian?

Writing by shinda on Wednesday, 22 of February , 2006

I was having a discussion with a Singh about comments he left, in an article on The Panthic Otpreka, in which he raised an interesting conversation point:Are we Canadian Sikhs or Sikh Canadians? Now for many this may seem like something pretty redundant and petty, but are we Canadians then Sikh? Or are we Sikhs then Canadian?

I would like to think the latter. Although we make home in Canada; a Sikhs first and foremost allegiance should be too their Guru, but I agree that this is just making note of a grammatical nuisance considering by no means does being a tall Sikh or a fast Sikh make one less of a of Sikh rather describes a characteristic of that Sikh.

However, regardless of how we formulate the sentence the real discussion revolves around the intent behind it. Do we intend to say that we are Canadians who happen to be Sikh? Or Sikhs who happen to be Canadian? Although both can be said using either line, the meanings for each is quite different. Whereas one implies loyalties to Guru Gobind Singh and the Panth first the other implies loyalties to the host nation first then after to the Guru and the Panth.

So where am I going with this. As Sikhs we need to realize that we have our own nation. Guru Sahib made and created us as Nyara, and not just in looks and philosophies as they apply in the religious sense, rather Nyara in the independent sovereign nation sense.

  • We have our own distinct identity and dress. (Panj Kakaars, Bana etc).
  • Own language, with its own dialect (Singha dee boli, atey Singhaa de Bol Balay)
  • Own musical traditions (Gurmat Sangeet - Partaal)
  • Both a political and pseudo religious system (Punj Pyarai & hierarchy of a justice system, Takhats).
  • Etc.

(A great read alluding to this can be read on solariders blog – The Revolutionary Sikh Spirit)

???? ???? ?? ??? ? ????, ??? ??? ???? ??? ????
They are not subservient to anyone, They are either purely sovereign or in a state of rebellion

??? ???? ????? ?? ?? ??? ???????, ??? ??? ???? ???????
To these Sikhs I have blessed sovereignty; They shall never forget their prophet,

- Panth Parkash (1841)

I think the above just speaks for itself, we are either free, or we are fighting for that freedom, there is no middle ground, which brings things back to what caused this whole conversation in the first place, the Sikhs and the Kirpaan.

With the Supreme Court decision coming out anytime now, there is no accepting a verdict that bans or puts unacceptable limits on the Kirpaan or any other kakaar for that matter. After all that would go against the fact that we have already establishished we are soverign.

So where is this all going and what does this all mean? Well it means that we need to identiy who we are. Unlike what many like Mr T Sher Singh have said,

“With the utmost respect, Mr. Vedanti and the Akhal Takht have no understanding of the Canadian context on this issue and have no jurisdiction to tell Canadians how to deal with it,” T. Sher Singh, a Guelph lawyer and trustee of the Sikh Foundation International, said.

“He’s no more a priest or high priest than I am the Queen of England,” Singh added. He noted that Sikhdom does not have a religious hierarchy.

- Toronto Star May 2005

Sri Akaal Takht Sahib has every right to dictate to Sikhs abroad especially those who have pledgded there allegance to the Guru Panth (by receiving Amrit), how to behave and act, after all any less would be us moving away even further from the system established by Guru Sahiban themselves.

So think, are you a Canadian first or a Sikh?

The way schooling ought to be…

Writing by shinda on Tuesday, 21 of February , 2006

I was sitting here looking at pictures of my brother from another mother, Puneet Singh, and realized how schooling ought to be. Check it for yourself, and for those of you studying up here in the North I know you will be able to relate to these feelings of why-o-why didn’t I go to the isles to study.

Where he’s living..
Where I’m living…
His view…

My view..

To go to class or sit in the sun..that is the question..
