Are we really all that different…

Writing by shinda on Thursday, 1 of June , 2006

Last weekend SikhSangat.com (popular Youth message board) was hacked, and everyone (actually just a few blogs) were up in arms over this despicable act. After all WHO would do such a thing? RSS, Congress, CSIS was the silent cry that resonated in the thoughts of few, after all who else would want to destroy SikhSangat.com?

From past experience anytime a Sikhi based website, especially one geared towards the Youth, has ever been hacked, the culprits themselves were Sikh Youth. The reason behind many of these hacks themselves consisted of personal squabbles where individuals had gotten into a fight of sorts with the admin.

The most famous and notorious of these so called hacks in my books was the whole SikhSangat and partners departing from W!N, leaving W!N like Humpty Dumpty. That’s not to say that change maybe wasn’t needed and the whole split was probably and most likely for the best, but none the less, it wasn’t exactly the most professional of breakups.

Anyways, after reading this post, on a blog that has become known for its thought provoking, in depth and inspiring articles, (hopefully that’ll keep them from coming after me), I get the feeling that the SikhSangat hack wasn’t all that much of a random act, and maybe, just maybe it was revenge. Then again that can’t be confirmed, leaving it neither here nor there. I’m also more then confident that the W!N admin team, condemn such acts, after all they’ve been in similar shoes numerous times in the past.

Whats even more ironic though is that these websites (run by Youth) mimic the Gurdwara politics we see amongst the so called lost and confused elders. Just think about it; Group 1 and Group 2 all got sikhi parchaar as their ultimate goal. Group 2 feels Group 1 is not listening or cooperating and is pushing their own personal agenda so they book it and go off on there own, (of course only after trying incredibly hard to reconcile there differences, to no avail). Time goes by and Group 2 seems to be doing better, which off course takes the pisss with group 1, who now feels that group 2’s movement is detrimental to their own, which off course is to do Sikhi Parchaar, and for that reason Group 2 is now the enemy, who should at no cost be spared. At the same time it would seem that all the new attention and “power” has gotten to Group 2 and as prophesied by many power corrupts. Group 1 wasting no time is all over the scandals. The corruption of Group 2 is brought out to the forefront, individuals are defamed and made to loose face, and then it all repeats.

So end of the day are we really all that different from past generations who we despise and credit for dropping the ball, since we’ve clearly already started down the same path? Is it fair to ridicule the so called elders in the Gurdwara committee’s when in-fighting occurs, while we proudly boast that the new generation has a better grasp on things when clearly we don’t. End of the day Internet sites only make up a small if not minuscule portion in the parchaar that is done, so if there’s issues at such a low level of sikhi parchaar then what can one expect for the future?

Great post shindiya,

Let me get this comment section off the ground with my .02.

The whole beef that people have with committees is seeping down into the youth, hands down.

The more organizations/jathay/associations/crews that are being created, the more the beef is stewing.

The problem here though is not the beleifs but its the affiliation to a crew.

I’ve always said that message boards are no good and are only used as a comical relief act or a way to pass one’s time.

You cant have everyone in the world side with you, although we thought the youth will get up and advance past these gurdwara politics, I personally think that it’s getting worse.

We can all talk about the problems, but what is the solution?

What is the Shaloosin Shingh??

Great Post!!! I really do think this is a real issue amongst the Youth. Elders were/are caught in there own little gangs and so are we. Really it is only the spiritually elevated who can guide us. They are the only ones who can rise above petty differences.

Sometimes certain people just like to cause trouble in order to feed there ego and make themselves feel important. There are way too many Youth with problem.

In the end we need to ask ourselves why we are doing the sevaa, if its for common good, then you have to be able to handle situations from different perspectives and expand your mind to accomodate others views.

Darn I wish I’d written this - said it often enough.

Makes a lot of sense.

As for a solution? Search me - but I suspect if we sort out some other problems then this one will fall by the wayside.

These days I rarely give any more than a passing glance at most BB’s; unless it’s a topic that’s organising or providing info about upcoming events. As a campaigning tool - there’re part of the arsenal. Apart from that; well there’re good for spending some hours when one could be doing something more productive.

Having said that …. time to get back to the blogging :-)

The battle since the start of time has been TRUTH AGAINST FALSE… this battle will never end.

Guru Sahibs had to fight so many battles because they stood by the TRUTH.

Same as now, when someone does something good for the panth, they will have to battle all those elements that want to feed their own ego and take the credit for it and not see others do good. This battle will never end, it didnt end in the past, wont ever end now…. only thing we can do as Gursikhs is make sure we stand for the TRUTH no matter what, even if it means going up against our own friends.

Great post Shinda Ji! I see your frustration with these internet jathabandi and Gurdwara jathabandi. You come up with some interesting facts on Sikho-religious politics. They don’t see what you see. My personal thought and question on this if I may, can someone name or post one individual that has embraced Sikhism thru internet or Print media Prachar of these groups in India, in the West or somewhere else on this Earth. Narrow mindedness of some only knows premises of Gurdwaras and does not want to open up to humans in general which could come from other religions, backgrounds and cultures. Most of the Sikhi prachar is done the wrong ways anyways. We emphasise so much on sacrifice, valor, courage, humility, humbleness of Gurus but never as to why they did what they did. In my opinion that was peace, justice freedom and the basic rigth of every human being to live on this earth, which we as Sikhs fail to show others. Yes, all these things require sacrifice, but we tend to forget how they got to that point. Why can’t we show a path of peace to someone as a Sikh thru Gurbani by singing it, reciting it, ultimately living it? There is so much beauty in almost every line of Gurbani that one can spend life time searching its meaning. As you said, I wish some of these internet hacker idiots would learn. Thanks for sharing!

Shinda Singh this is a nice post. You’re making a clear point that there seems to be division from the elders to the youth. I’ve participated on some of the discussion boards and have been dragged through the mud, so to speak. I don’t feel like any dirt actually reached me, but the intention of others was to trash me. My intention was simply to defend people that were being slandered and clear up misconceptions and point out statements that were being made without evidence. The few times that I’ve participated on some discussions it turns into an attack on my personality and who I’m associated with. It is only safe to assume I am associated with the Guru, beyond that people are making false and ignorant statements.
People seem to think that unity means uniformity. Even Guru Gobind Singh himself encouraged diversity in the panth. Not everybody can be a master of everything. Different Sikhs were taught different skills and people practiced and mastered what the Guru led them to. It is the same today.
If we honestly believe that the Guru is there when an Amrit Sanchar takes place, then we honestly have to believe that the Guru is giving different (but fundamentally the same) rehits to Sikhs. We are not the Guru, but we pray and ask the Guru for guidance, so why do we then tell other people what’s right and wrong?
I don’t want the Sikh problems people to come after me, but I don’t particularly like that blog. I like the comment of somebody else on there where they said, why not have a Sikh solutions blog? The Sikh problems blog looks like slander to me, which is something I try to avoid.
The people that are always getting slandered on the internet and elsewhere aren’t even close to what Sajjan the Thug was. YET, even Sajjan the Thug became a devotee of Guru Nanak!!! I’ve made enough mistakes in my life that I don’t need to concentrate on the mistakes of others.
The true Khalsa fears nothing. It is extremely low to be fearful of people’s differences and to attack because of one’s fear. Raj Karega Khalsa!
