BOYCOTT PARTITION!

Writing by shinda on Wednesday, 31 of January , 2007

For those of you who follow the comments the above video clip isn’t really news, but I thought I’d share it anyways. Incidentally Hollywood has decided to take an interest in the saga that once divided Punjab, and has decided to go down a path that even Bollywood is weary of traveling down.

The thing that Bollywood understands better then Hollywood, is that even though ‘84 was a huge atrocity and slap against the Sikh psyche, the Sikh community in India and abroad is nonetheless greatly divided on the whole thing with many Sikhs themselves having accepted the blame for the events of the mid 80’s. Yet when it comes to the topic of partition and India’s independence the vast majority (of Sikhs) let their patriotism shine through.

That goes without saying though, considering that a majority of those who suffered (lost land, wealth, lives etc) were Sikhs. Majority of the armed forces that battled against Pakistan at the time were Sikh (90% if memory serves me right), and it was the Sikhs after all who lost the freedom to access Nakana Sahib. Taking all that into account it should be no surprise that naturally a movie that tends to show Sikhs in a negative light in that whole saga won’t exactly be praised or win any acclaims from this side.

Now in all fairness I have yet to watch the trailer with any sound, but then again the pictures in the scenes do speak for themselves, and it’s no surprise that this movie offends at multiple levels. First it attacks the sentiments of those who hold the Sikhi saroop in high esteem with the man’s cutting his hair and all for his girl. Then it insults the more general Sikh populous with the whole converting to Islam (the enemy) thing.

How it ends up I guess you’d have to watch the movie to find out. Does he keep his kes again?, or does he win over his girl with his new found faith? Does their love conquer all and do they defy all religious, cultural and whatever other boundaries they had separating them to be together? Does Clark reveal his powers to Lana and steal her away from this fool? One can only speculate, but that would involve watching the movie, which after all we are trying to boycott.

Then again who really cares? Its just a movie, a chic flick at that, so who out of ‘yall (those having already commented) would have gone to see this movie anyways? Be honest, by even bringing it this much attention we are doing exactly what the directors and producers always wanted, creating a buzz. A buzz, good or bad, which will create a sense of curiosity in peoples minds, making them to want and see more of the movie. Making those inept of pirating the movie from mininova to actually go and pay to even watch it, fueling the economic engine, making this project all worth while for the producers to begin with.

Now that i think about it, why are we so pissed again? Is it at the fact that they’re showing a Singh converting to Islam? or are we pissed at them showing him cutting his hair? or was it that raunchy scene with him and Kristen that’s got us all buzzing for the boycott? After all if thats whats got our kashera’s in a knot then don’t we got bigger problems to worry about, seeing as how 18 year olds are leaving Sangat, doing the devils powder, and murdering mans?

Oh well I said my piece, time to get back to work.

Isn’t this one of the first Hollywood movies actually starring a Sikh? I think this movie will be a bad first impression of Sikhi for all those ppl who don’t know what Sikhi in North America. In terms of you’re point of 18 year olds acting stupid, of course there are some dumb kids that act stupid in every religion, but everyone generally knows its not because of their religion, it’s because these kids are dumbasses. This movie is presenting an ideal Sikh during those times and is totally ripping apart Sikhi…

i agree with patriot.. this is the first time sikhs are being portrayed in the mainstream media.. and for a bunch of people, this is the first time anybody is hearing about a sikh.. and regardless of whether its a ****** movie and no one will go out of their way to watch it.. theres gonna be commercials, trailers and what not.. and lets face it.. their are already a bunch of brown people who will go into it thinking oh cool.. its a movie about brown people.. thats what i thought when i was in the theatre watching another movie and the trailer came up… its the fact that the name of sikhi is getting demolished by this fool who sells out in a second.. when during that time if you were a sikh.. you were a sikh.. you were proud and held your head up high.. for sure i could believe a sikh helping out a muslim women during brutal times but to cut off his hair.. go against the entire community and have a whole full fletched affair..and basically abandon your entire identity.. it personally stings to know that for the first time the sikh name will be dropped all across the western world it will be a huge misrepresentation and its a huge insult to those men during those times that didnt let thier turban touch the ground for nobody and here in an instant.. this man chops it off… BOYCOTT!!!… if not completely go all out. .atleast let something be heard.. a condemnation by the sikh community for false representation or somethingg..

The movie is based on a true story of an older Sikh soldier named Buta Singh and a girl called Zainab. He saved her life, paid off the people chasing her. Eventually he married her and had a daughter.

The girl was reported and the authorities took her away to a camp to be sent back to Pakistan even though she didn’t want to go.

In Pakistan she was married to her cousin. Buta Singh went to Delhi, converted to Islam and went across the border. He went to get her back but was beaten up by her family. He approached the court who had a hearing. Zainab was brought to court where (maybe under pressure) she said that she didn’t want to go back with him and she didn’t want their daughter.

Buta Singh then went to Lahore Station and jumped in front of a train with his daughter. Daughter survived, was brought up by a Muslim family and was eventually married off in Dubai.

Buta Singh’s grave was dug up by Zainab’s family but Pakistanis buried him again and even posted guards to prevent future disrespect. His grave is a bit of a shrine now.

Listen, we can boycott and do whatever. Can u stop all the other communities from not seeing this film. I don’t think so. We keep saying boycott this and that. We also keep saying that this portraits how a sikh converts into Islam.

First of all what about all the stuff that had happened in England with the whole Muslims tying to convert Sikhs and all that.

Secondly how much better are those people that are born into Sikh families but go and get their hair cut.

**** its a damn film and the guy actin as a sikh is a friggin Bhamin as well so u know what go ahead and boycott it as much as you want.

I guarantee it will be in the top 5 in the box office for the first weekend.

Boycottt Zindabad!! But I dont think its gonna work.

I don’t think making a petition will make it more popular in that sense…I think making a petition or spreading the word that the movie is **** will actually create more awareness about what we’re fighting for and against…It’ll create more awareness about real sikhi

Have faith in the boycott. With kirpa we will pass the test. like shinda pointed out a new person to sikhi watching this will get a false image for sikhs everywhere. it is a bad example for all sikhs. Shinda fill us in here boy. give us some input. i say Boycott through petitons first. lets unite

It’s going to come out and people are going to see it. Let’s not create a buzz.
It’s too bad that this will be the first impression that people get of Sikhs, but recent history has shown that young Sikhs turn violent when protesting. That would mean people’s first impression is a lame movie and people who (they think) are so fanatic and stupid they get violent over a movie.
Unfortunately it’s already made and going to be seen, lets not create the controversy that will bring more people to see it.

singh from your flag

Made Thursday, 1 of February , 2007 at 5:55 pm

hey hey no one’s talking about violence

if people see it they’re going to get a biased image of Sikhs and Sikhism

if we protest against it, the same people may realize that however the movie portrays Sikhs is not how Sikhs are …
