Kids these Days

Writing by shinda on Monday, 14 of May , 2007

You would think that after everyone had the R.I.P Kaka name tags in all there cyber profiles, and after those highly hyped stop the violence meetings at the Gurdwara’s that it be at least a year before folks started rushing out trying to kill one another again, but seems like the tempers and ego’s just couldn’t wait.,

I guess what’s most annoying about all this is that it’s easy to see in hindsight how quickly this could have been anyone from my own generation or own circle of friends from highschool, considering the ego’s back then were just as big as the kids these days, but seems like these kids all got an extra chip on there shoulder for some reason. As if they really have something to prove to the elders and past generations that they’re just as rugged if not more then them. Maybe they’re tired of hearing about the glory day’s of the senior crews, the PM’s, CB4’s, Saraba’s, BBS’s, the Rexdale-Malton beefs of past, or whoever else you may have that came before them and done something so regrettably stupid but made it out alive, that the story later became suburban street folk-lore, setting a standard they feel they need to live up to.

In the end who knows what’s being put in the food of these kids to make them feel so ghetto fabulous, or what hannibal-istic ingredient is being added to their cheerios and fruit loops, infecting them with some next form of mad cow diesease.

And as parents go running looking for the answer, screaming to the giani’s and other youth leaders, blaming them for not being able to rescue there lost child, asking why couldn’t they have gone out of there way to highlight the symptoms and save their blood, one can only wonder what lessons the others may have learned, after all the lesson itself always remains embodied within the action.

Brampton brawl ends with teen slain

19-year-old stabbed in ‘mass chaos’ as youths fight outside party in subdivision. Neighbour puts her house up for sale

May 14, 2007 JIM WILKES STAFF REPORTER

A teen was stabbed to death as a beer-fuelled party spilled into a Brampton street and he challenged battling partygoers.

A handful of teens tried to administer first aid to Amrinder Singh Atwal, 19, as he lay bleeding on Culture Cres. Saturday night.

About two dozen others fled before police arrived.

Residents described the area, near Chinguacousy Rd. and Williams Parkway, as a quiet neighbourhood of young families where the loudest noise is usually youngsters playing basketball in the street.

But a quiet barbecue and party turned violent about 10:15 p.m. Saturday as dozens of teens emerged from a house and began beating each other with beer bottles.

Neighbour Rob Voth said he watched as two teens pinned another against a fence and threw punches as a third kicked him.

The teen was also stabbed, but is expected to recover.

Voth, 38, said he watched another teen, later identified as Atwal, stand in the street exhorting others to fight.

“You could see his hand was up with some kind of weapon in his hand, whatever it was, ready for battle, preparing himself, like, `bring it on,’” he said. “It all happened pretty fast.” Police said the brawl was triggered by a long-simmering dispute among some of the partygoers.

“It was something about, `You didn’t like me in Grade 10,’” said Voth.

“It’s not a good scene,” he said, gazing across a street criss-crossed with yellow police tape. “I’ve only been here two years and now I’m ready to go a little further north into the country, do some home-schooling with my kids and make sure they’re safe.”

His wife Samantha also said they may move from the neighbourhood constructed just six years ago.

“It was mass chaos,” she said. “There were people screaming. It was very scary. You don’t expect something like that to happen on your front lawn.”

She fought back tears as she spoke of the teen’s death.

“You wake up and it’s Mother’s Day and you realize that a mother is without her son,” she said.

Lisa Snelgrove, a 29-year-old mother of children age 12, 10 and 8, didn’t take much time to decide their future.

“I called my real estate agent to put my house up for sale as soon this tape comes down,” she said. She said she moved to Brampton from Rexdale “to give my kids a better life.”

But she doesn’t know where they’ll go next to escape violence. “It’s everywhere,” she said. “My daughter was in tears, crying her eyes out. They asked me if anybody died. I’m not going to lie to them,” she said. “You don’t want to have to explain that to any child.”

Snelgrove watched as teens tried to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on Atwal. “But by that time it looked like it was too late,” she said.

Peel police said yesterday they hadn’t found the knife used to kill Atwal.

Nicely written. This kid was at that past youth violence assembly, and I believe he spoke at it as well.

Hey bro just wanted to say I was googling the incident involving the young teenager recently murdered, Amrinder Atwal, and happened to come across a link that led to your article on the incident. I am 22 years old and have to agree with what you are saying. These younger youths are just out of their minds. Don’t understand why they are so wild. My older brother was into that whole gang stuff at a young age and now he’s 29 and he told me that the smartest thing he’s ever done was get away from that type of lifestyle. There’s nothing in it. He’s living a successful life now and is fight-free for the last 4-5 years. Just wish these young youths would think and realize just how stupid their actions are. And if you do wanna fight, be a man and leave the weapons out of it. Back in the day it was just fists man. Now everyone watching too much of that scarface bullshit and trying to be Tony Mantana. WAKE UP! WAKE THE HELL UP YOUTH!

Hey,

I also googled this incident and came about your page, and I really like some of your blogs so I’ll be on this website alot more…

Having said that, this dispute (much like many in brampton) is over nothing. They are kids fighting over stupid things, to create some sort of dispute that doesnt exist… Now, I’m from Scarborough, so Im used to this stuff. But…

What happened to men being men? Kids are going to fight, but when I was in high school (only 3 years ago) we used fists. We settled it like men, we fought got it over with, and shook hands after.

Not that I promote violence, but thinking needs to change. If people are going to fight, do it with fists, like men

Sorry, just my 2 cents

BRAMPTON - An Oakville teenager has been charged with second-degree murder in a deadly street brawl on a quiet Brampton street Saturday night.

Sujenthan Ramanathan, 18, was arrested by Peel homicide detectives overnight Monday and was scheduled to appear in court yesterday morning. His 46-year-old mother, Kohilavanee Ramanathan, and two brothers, Arjenthan Ramanathan, 20, and Sajenthan Ramanathan, 18, (a fraternal twin) were also arrested overnight. They are facing charges of being accessories after the fact. They are all Oakville residents.

High school student Amrinder Singh Atwal, 19, of Brampton died of a single stab wound to the torso, a post mortem revealed Monday.

Police say their investigation has revealed only one of the many young people involved in the fight stabbed both Atwal and another young man who was treated and released from hospital. However, they are still looking for others who were involved in the street brawl as either witnesses or possible assault suspects.

Peel Homicide Insp. Norm English said a close friend of Sujenthan Ramanathan was at one time a schoolmate of Atwal at Bramalea Secondary School.

Police today are trying to track down that friend, who they say was also at the party.

English said it was a long-simmering “immature” feud dating back a few years that sparked the fight.

There were at least 20 youth on the street at the time, although how many were actually fighting differs “depending on who you talk to,” English said.

There were two dozen or more young people between the ages of 19 and 21 at what started out as a barbecue at a house on Culture Crescent in the area of Chinguacousy Road and Williams Parkway. A young woman whose parents were not at home at the time was hosting the party.

At 10:15 p.m., a fight that had started among partygoers spilled out onto the street and they began hitting each other with beer bottles.

Witnesses said a handful of teens tried to administer first aid to Atwal after he was stabbed. He died in hospital a short time later.

Some of the combatants left before police arrived, others stayed, but English said investigators are tracking down and interviewing those who attended the party as well as residents in the otherwise quiet neighbourhood.

Atwal was a Grade 12 student at Bramalea Secondary School throughout most of his high school years, but had just withdrawn about a week ago and was awaiting acceptance into Peel District School Board’s alternative program, according to board spokesperson Sylvia Link.

He had a job and was working to help support his family, and needed the flexible class hours that the alternative program can offer, Link said.

“It’s the same high school program, but it can be tailored to individual needs,” Link said.

Students at Bramalea have been hit hard by news of his death, according to Link. Counsellors were at the school Tuesday morning, the first day back for students after a professional development day. As soon as Principal Elaine Topping announced their presence, students immediately started making their way to the school’s library to speak to the counsellors, Link said.

“Amrinder was very well known and very well liked by students and staff,” she said. “He always had a smile for everyone. He was very bright and interested in his course work. It’s clearly a shock for everyone at the school.”

A memorial table was set up at the school with a memory book and a photograph of Atwal.

The killing has upset residents in the Brampton neighbourhood, too.

Neighbour Rob Voth said he watched as two teens pinned another against a fence and threw punches as a third kicked him.

Voth, 38, said he watched another teen, later identified as Atwal, stand in the street exhorting others to fight.

“You could see his hand was up with some kind of weapon in his hand, whatever it was, ready for battle, preparing himself, like, ‘bring it on’,” he said. “It all happened pretty fast.

“It was something about, ‘You didn’t like me in Grade 10′,” said Voth.

“It’s not a good scene,” he said, gazing across a street criss-crossed with yellow police tape. “I’ve only been here two years and now I’m ready to go a little further north into the country, do some home-schooling with my kids and make sure they’re safe.”

His wife, Samantha, also said they may move from the neighbourhood constructed just six years ago.

The incident shook many residents on the street.

Lisa Snelgrove, a 29-year-old mother of children age 12, 10 and 8, made a snap decision.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Peel police, Homicide Bureau, at 905-453-3311, ext. 3205, or Peel Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

I have to agree with you. this article is well written and i do not understand why kids these days act the way they do. I guess they all just play “follow the leader” and dont think about thier acitons and consquences. First of all, house parties are really stupid because they are out of control and anything can happen. Haven’t people learned that in the punjabi community, house parties always lead to sutpidness because alcohol is involved and all the boys think thier so big and “bad” when really they are just a bunch of losers who think thier cool! Inviting a bunch of people you dont know to your house is just stupid because if there is a brawl, you cant rely on security to break it up. honestly, having “beef since grade 10″ is just ridiculous, childish, and DUMB! it is no reason to kill someone!

I loved Minda as well. There’s not a day that passes by without me thinking of him. Too all of u that did not no Amrinder, He was a sweetheart. He was the type of person who always made people around him happy. So when u talk about him like he was some ****** up little youth, you are completely wrong. You don’t know what happened that night. This wasn’t some little house party, it was a very small bbq…So get ur information right. Second of all, most of the information written in the article is false. They are statements from witness who stood by there doors while Minda fought for his life. None of which really know what happened. No one really knows what happened that night, except those who were involved. So please don’t judge the people involved because u think u know what happened. This can happen to anyone anywhere. Trust me I know. So please don’t think of Minda as a troublemaker. He really was a good person and I can’t believe that he had to leave us this way.
