UFC has Pride

Writing by shinda on Tuesday, 27 of March , 2007

For those who haven’t heard yet UFC bought out Pride today for an estimated 70 million US, monopolizing its hold on the MMA fight scene.  If the news is to be somewhat reminiscent of when WWF (screw the E) bought WCW back in the glory days of Wrestling, then I guess that would make the IFL the TNA, in UFC’s back side.

Although this now makes UFC vs Pride dream fights possible, it also brings about changes to Pride’s rules, i.e banning the use of stomping and knee’s while on the ground. Either way it’s still good news for the sport, and I can’t wait to see the Superbowl of UFC / Pride fighting. The news is best when you think about fighters like Anderson Silva, GSP and even possibly Liddell who seemingly are above and beyond most other fighters in their respected weight classes finally getting some better competition. Hopefully this change will help keep all these fighters on their toes, and bring about some historic match ups in the near future.

Anyways for more info on the merger check out ESPNSherdog or the official UFC site, and hopefully Bhagauti will have something more insightful to say about the merger.

Its all about the Team…

Writing by shinda on Wednesday, 14 of March , 2007

or in case of the Green Street Hooligans, the firm. So yesterday I came across this movie, Green Street hooligans, never heard of it before, never even knew it existed until someone recommended I check it out. Now usually when a movie goes un-noticed its because the movie sucks, or it’s in some next language and you have to read subtitles to make sense of things, this movies neither of the two.

I won’t go into details, but this has to be one of the greatest sports movies of all time. Then again that could be because it has little to do with sports and more about the firms that surround the English football scene. See there’s never been a question that the Europeans take sports seriously, and that Football is like religion down there with the star players being like prophets, but who would have guessed that the sports teams  got a gang type sub culture. Groups willing to go to war with other groups all based on the home teams. Imagine being a part of a crew, and whenever the Raps played New Jersey you’d all go down together to start it up with the New Jersey crew, who are affiliated with the Nets. It would take the Carter beef to a whole ’nother level.

Now whether such things as firms even exist is beyond me, I wouldn’t be surprised if they do and maybe the UK natives could confirm that, but regardless they go to make one hell of a movie. To best describe this movie its a Fight Club meets some soccer flick, meets Boyz in the Hood. I’m telling you this movies an instant classic, on all levels. For some reason though I couldn’t get 300 out of my head, “This is Madness…NOOO this is GREEEEEEEEEEN STREEEEEEEET”….

Whatever check the trailer out and be sure to grab the movie, its on mininova still, that is off course if you can’t find it at Blockbuster or anywhere else.

Writing by shinda on Friday, 23 of February , 2007

After watching this video from last nights brawl in Ottawa, I feel like grabbing an Emery jersey. This fight was just to dirty.

Out with the old …

Writing by shinda on Tuesday, 2 of January , 2007

Firstly Happy New year to anyone who wishes it, secondly Chuck Lidell = utter dominance.

There was no better way to end the year off , then watching UFC 66 with the Iceman going one on one again against the Huntington Beach Bad Boy. In all honesty I had to say that this card was right up there, and that’s saying a lot considering it’s coming off of the great PPV that happened only a month ago which saw Hughes get dethroned by the young legend in George St. Peirre.

Anyway’s here’s a quick breakdown on how I saw things:

Jason MacDonald Vs. Chris Leben - [video of the match]

I had MacDonald down to take this match early on and saw him dominating Leben right from the start. Leben none the less came in as a man on a mission, with that extra chip on shoulder ever since he got publicly man handled a few months back at the hands of Anderson Silva, showing us that he isn’t near as bad as Silva made him out to be.  After dominating MacDonalad most of the match, the Alberta native was able to catch Leben in the submission. To Lebens credit he held out and lost consciousness and the fight was stopped as a result. Although he’s not the greatest of fighters in my book this kid clearly has heart.

Andrei Arlovski Vs. Marcio Cruz - [video of the match]

Arlovski is the man,  the greatest heavyweight in the UFC today. Yea, Tim Sylvia has proven time and again why he’s the champ, but 2006 was a tough year for Arlovski, but he ended it right by getting back to his winning ways.Although he didn’t utterly dominate Cruz, he did beat him without breaking a sweat, which goes to show that not only is his conditioning set, but a fact that he deserves some real competition. Would love to see how he handles someone like Kamal’s boy, Monson or how effectively he could deal someone like Vera

Forest Griffen Vs Keith Jardine

Griffen has risen ranks real fast, none the less he was handed what I would consider his first real loss in UFC thanks to Keith Jardine. Not much needs to be said about this fight other then Jardine hit Griffen where it hurt. Hopefully like Lebron, now that Griffen knows what it feels like to loose, hes going to come back harder then ever.

Chuck Liddell Vs. Tito Ortiz

The main event proved to be nothing short of what it was expected from Lidell. Ortiz came in with great poise while ol’ Chukie boy came in with not a care in the world. Many questioned Lidell’s drive and hunger compared to that of Tito’s, none the less Lidell proved that being on top for so long hasn’t taken anything away from his game. To Ortiz’s credit he took the hits and covered up for as long as he could, but that saw him spending most of the fight in the fetal position while Chuck had his way. It was no secret that for Ortiz to win, the fight would need to taken to the ground, which is ironic considering Lidell’s a wrestler first and only later became the striker he is today. All the same Ortiz had a few valiant attempts at taking Chuck down to ground in the second round, but just wasn’t able to capitalize which saw Lidell holding on to the gold.

…and in with the new

2007 seems to hold a lot of promise for UFC, thanks in part to 3 major fighters in the industry.

1) Quinton Jackson. The only unresolved fight Lidell has on his plate, Jackson should prove to be a welcome addition to the Light Heavyweight division. Whether or not he can repeat his victory on Lidell second time around should be interesting to watch. Personally I’d still put my money on Lidell seeing as how there last fight was almost a lifetime ago, and how both fighters have grown since. It will be interesting to see whether or not UFC has slown Lidell down any, and if K1 has really improved Jackson.

2) Anderson Silva. It’s only a matter of time (I hope) before him and GSP go toe to toe. I’d love to see Silva drop down or even GSP work 15 lbs up so that the two of these guys can go at it.

3) Mirco Cro Cop. Undoubtedly one of the greatest heavyweight in the world, its only a matter of time before he strips Tim Sylvia and then standing toe to toe against Arlovski. Although many in there sane minds don’t see Arlovski having a chance, I think a fight like that is just what Arlovski needs to prove himself to the world.

All the same be sure to check out Bhagauti’s take on things..

The Champ is Here

Writing by shinda on Monday, 20 of November , 2006

Fights only going to last a few hours online before it gets removed, so enjoy it while it lasts.

For a complete and in depth and real analysis check out, Bhagauti Soora’s post. Personally I have to say this was a refreshing fight to watch and lived up to all the hype that surrounded it. Unlike the Shamrock series which left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth this fight delivered. I remember when these guys first went at it 2 years ago, but I never really took George St Pierre seriously that time around. Kamal quickly showed me the error in my ways none the less, and after watching Pierre against Penn and then Hughes against Penn, I saw that Pierre was definitely the future.

His whole fighting style is just impeccable. He got’s the stand up, the grappling, he is the total package. I think the low blows in this fight were some what over rated, first one didn’t really seem to make contact second one, seemed like Hughes was doing a Carter impersonation, but McCarthy was saying it was his ankle that was making contact which I guess I just can’t see that clearly from the given angle.

Anyway’s watch and enjoy the fight for yourselves, end of the day, The Champ is here..

By the way Sylvia did good also, every fight he seems to be coming across as being more and more versatile then I imagine, although I still  want to see him and Arlovski go at it one more time, just to remove all doubt.

Display of Might

Writing by shinda on Thursday, 16 of November , 2006

Here’s a clip from last weekends Jor Melaa that happened in Surrey, BC. The atmosphere seems pumping with the Sangat really into the match, creating for what seems to be an amazing atmosphere. What really impressed me with the whole thing was the reffing, which is usually one of the most sensitive areas in such competitions. I liked how the 3 refs around the edges were all active, and working together with everyone seeming to be actively judging the match. Although this doesn’t necessarily eliminate missed calls or objectionable calls it does seem to reduce them, making for what would seem to be fairer matches, albeit longer ones.

The below match match pits, two of the current top Gatka players in North America, Sukhjinder and Teghbir Singh, both students of the late Charnjit Singh, against one another. Both have also participated in past Yudhs with Teghbir being the Yudh champion from 2004 while Sukhjinder impressed the Sangat this year by finishing first in the Kirpaan Demo, and fended of elimination against some of the top competitors, and his match against Jarnail was one for the ages.

Hopefully more videos from Jor Melaa will find there way online, likewise with videos from past Yudhs.

Hopefully we can see the rivalry grow and have a rematch of sorts at the next Yudh; which is slated to happen in the summer of 2007.
