or in case of the Green Street Hooligans, the firm. So yesterday I came across this movie, Green Street hooligans, never heard of it before, never even knew it existed until someone recommended I check it out. Now usually when a movie goes un-noticed its because the movie sucks, or it’s in some next language and you have to read subtitles to make sense of things, this movies neither of the two.
I won’t go into details, but this has to be one of the greatest sports movies of all time. Then again that could be because it has little to do with sports and more about the firms that surround the English football scene. See there’s never been a question that the Europeans take sports seriously, and that Football is like religion down there with the star players being like prophets, but who would have guessed that the sports teams got a gang type sub culture. Groups willing to go to war with other groups all based on the home teams. Imagine being a part of a crew, and whenever the Raps played New Jersey you’d all go down together to start it up with the New Jersey crew, who are affiliated with the Nets. It would take the Carter beef to a whole ’nother level.
Now whether such things as firms even exist is beyond me, I wouldn’t be surprised if they do and maybe the UK natives could confirm that, but regardless they go to make one hell of a movie. To best describe this movie its a Fight Club meets some soccer flick, meets Boyz in the Hood. I’m telling you this movies an instant classic, on all levels. For some reason though I couldn’t get 300 out of my head, “This is Madness…NOOO this is GREEEEEEEEEEN STREEEEEEEET”….
Whatever check the trailer out and be sure to grab the movie, its on mininova still, that is off course if you can’t find it at Blockbuster or anywhere else.

Last Friday, I got to go check out Anokhe Amar Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Ji, that primiered in theaters. Suprinsigly enough the movie was being played at Famous Players Silver City, and from the ad’s I saw in the papers is being carried by a lot of the big screen famous player theaters around town, pretty impressive for a dharmic movie.
As far as Dharmic movies go, this was probabbly one of the best ones I’ve seen produced so far. Considering that nearly all Dharmic films are low budget and that they got there own obstacles, (as far as character’s go and all that). The movie did a good job creativly in getting around these things.
The acting is what you can expect from such films, some was good, a lot was bad, with the biggest problem off course being the over-acting of some characters, but then again given some time I’m sure this will get better. Fight scenes, were at best bollywood-esque, but then again maybe it’s to soon to expect an amritdhari Jet Lee style action hero. With all that said, what made this movie the best dharmic movie to date, is simply the sakhi of Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Ji is worth accolades on its own, if a writer were to try to write about it, an artist to try and depict it, then even that honest attempt would bring them praise, regardless of all other short comings. Along with the comedy interjections this movie remained bareable to watch, and helped make it not feel like the 2 hours and 30 minutes that it turned out to be. For those never exposed to ithyaas, and espeically children not yet exposed to Hollywood blockbusters then I’m sure that they’ll get a kick out of it and take the most away from this movie, but I can’t imagine being a 12 year old and being able to sit through the entire thing, without getting restless.
For those concerned about depictions of Baba Deep Singh Ji by an actor etc, then take peace in knowing that the film makers did a good job in working around this by acting around it. Whenever a scene needed to show Baba Ji, sketch’s were brought in, and the actors would then paraphrase the events of what they were seeing and hearing.
The thing that really annoyed me with the whole film was the costumes. They were just too clean. You’d expect Singhs living in jungles to have a little more dirt/fade on there chola’s, but instead everyone was rocking sparkling bright blue or oranage and in the case of the moghuls green, as if they had a never ending supply of Oxy clean.
In the same regard the one thing worth noting was that all the Singhs used in the movie had real dharis, watch some of the other movies and you’ll notice the rented Santa Clause beards that the actors got on. Real is always good.
Overall, the movie by no means is a blockbuster, but should be checked out to at the very least to at the very least aknowledge and support the effort made by the film makers, and hopefully inspire other creative, and better peices such as this one in the future.
I was planning on leaving early this morning for the store and school, but while eating breakfast and flipping through the channels to find my dose of morning sports highlights from last night, I came across Rocky 5 playing on A & E, so couldn’t help, but to sit back and watch.
Growing up, the Rocky movies were always a favourite. (So were the Rambo’s and Terminators). I think Rocky was one of those movies that all desi’s loved. I still remember sitting around with my dad and uncles watching Rocky, and I knew half of them couldn’t understand a word that was being said, but they still loved watching the man fight, and wouldn’t hesitate to add to their own custom soundtrack with “Hii”, “Ohhh”, “Oh Dekh”, “Oh Mariya”, “Dekhiiiiii”.
Anyways I remember hearing a year ago, about rumours of a Rocky 6, with Rocky’s son or him coming back. So I google’d it and truth be told production on Rocky 6 just got started a little while ago. (I also managed to find the script and screen play to it).
Now Rocky 5 was crucified by the critics as an un-necessary sequel, although I didn’t think it was all that bad. So I wonder if Rocky 6 will be any good (after all its been 30 years since the original Rocky) , or will it end up being a desperate attempt by Stallone to rake in some money and revive his acting career.
I guess we have to wait until 2007 before we find out, let’s just hope he doesn’t mess this up, but until then I can’t help but look forward to it.
