Day 4..That’s all folks…

Writing by shinda on Friday, 30 of December , 2005

So today marked the final day of the ball camp. Seemed like the kids all had fun, and a continuous flow of youth kept coming in, with each day having more then the last. Some would consider that an organizers nightmare, but not the organizers behind this event; they were more like water, and knew how to flow and adjust with the change with the terrain.

Today was basically a wrap up of the entire week, where all the skills that had been practiced, via the countless layup, defense, boxing out and shooting drills, was put to the test, in game situations.

It’s impossible to teach everything and impossible to fix all areas of one persons game in such limited time, but I think all players noticed that they all came out better and improved, because it showed, and hopefully this little clinic will be enough to get people onto their school teams.

Highlights from the camp include:

  • Bougaloo teaching kids how to box out.
    • “Put the man on yo back”
    • “This is your house, if that man scores, he just disrespected you. Don’t let no one disrespect you in your own house.”
  • Mugsy.
    • What can I say Mugsy’s, a highlight real. The black flash.
  • Quick Wick
    • Working his squad on day 1 and 2 as if it was military camp.
  • Big Tony
    • Running the kids as if it was military camp.
  • Gagan
    • Thinking he’s a wicked coach, because he took an all star team to the finals and won.
    • Coaching like Jeff Van Gundy on the Knicks.
    • Appl
  • Shinda
    • I’m ill, this is my blog and I’mma big myself up for the sake of it.
    • I was the Sam Mitchell of this camp: an able coach with a team full of potential who just needed some more work and practice together, before we could win a game.

For all yall who doubted me, just wait. Shinda Saingh is back in training. I’mma start my workout routine again this semester, adding focus to my cardio (time to get back my speed and stamina).

Bougaloo needs to watch his back also, come summer I’m going to be slamming on him once again, giving Mugsy a reason to scream, “in ya mout’ “..

Now yall can enjoy some pictures and clips from today (More to be on SikhStudents.ca - coming soon).

The art of the box out by Sensai Bougaloo.

Boxing out in practice..

Coach Nav..After joining another team, I was promoted from Assistant to Head coach..brrrup..

The Finals…Gagans - Spurs vs Bougaloo’s Heat. Clearly the rebounding drills worked..

Young Hova (JP) dropped a long bomb…it was Pauls turn to return the favour..

Notice the difference in coaching styles. Bougaloo taking a page from the Zenmaster while Gagan acts as erratic as Van Gundy.

Dirty block to start, and to add insult to injury Gagans squad gets the offensive board.

Trying to make a move..With defense like this, you can see why Gagan took the championship.

Its all about respect in the end na saying.

Gagan celebrating his cheap, unethical, and undeserving championship. You thought Pat Riley and Phil Jackson had beef, you aint seen nothing yet.

Thank you, for coming out, now leave, the gyms closed.

Mr. Chardi Kalaa styling as always.

Organizers and coach’s. (5, 6 are missing from the above pic)

Camp participants minus 10, 15, guys who couldn’t bare to show there face after loosing to Gagans team AKA The San Antonio Spurs.

Run kids run…haha I love being on this side of the fence..

The art of boxing out, by Sensai Bougaloo..Put the man on yo back..

Coach Shinda…I mean Assistant

Writing by shinda on Wednesday, 28 of December , 2005

As you all should know by now, today was day 2 of the COSS - Basketball Camp. There’s about 30-35 kids, which although may seem like a small group, is relatively large when you look at the size of the gym and the amount of time set for the camp. Its also not bad considering the only advertising done for it was to put it up on 2, 3 message boards, and then forward the poster around 3 days before the camp was due to start.

Maybe next time around we’ll go for a bigger gym, and try to spread word a little sooner, one can only imagine the results.

Anyways today I actually stayed the duration, and was able to help out. Be honest I haven’t been around the grassroots level basketball since I was in grade 9. After that I stopped trying to play rep, and left the intramural scene all together. By grade 11 competitive basketball became a thing of the past, and come OAC casual pick up ball became annual pick up ball. So a lot of things about this camp brings back memories of my glory days, (at least these days I’m on the other side of the fence, telling people to run suicides while I sit back and watch).

So today I was helping Nav run drills and realized how much I’ve forgotten, not just from the type of drills but including the fundamentals such as which leg your supposed to go up with when doing a layup). Lucky for me, the Toronto Khalsa/Kharkoo’s ball guys know what they’re doing, and all I have to do is regurgitate there advice as if it was my own.

Anyways enough of that, now to what most ‘yall came here for in the first place, the pictures. (Only got a few worth posting, since someone didn’t replace batteries).

For more pics check out the sikhstudents website (due out any second now).

Mugsy AKA Tha Black Flash..

Race to the finish..Mugsy’s team looses…MAAAAAAAALTON WHAAAAAAAT..

Running the drills….

Showing the kids how NOT to shoot

Keep your eyes on the ball…

A look at the ball camp…

Writing by shinda on Tuesday, 27 of December , 2005

Every break, winter, march, summer, we’ve always tried to do something for the kids under COSS. This winter although kind of last minute, a basketball camp was put together.

Originally it was supposed to be both a ball and stick hockey thing, but then due to the nature of the break, it was hard to book gym time and costs where getting steep. Luckily Mandeep, and Parminder Singh were able to book the gym time at the Malton Community Center, so for this week (27th - 30th) between 12 - 3PM the ball guys and volunteers from various SSA’s will be hosting this skills development camp.

I was able to drop in at the start so I took some pictures.

Mandeep laying down the rules, (trust me more people showed up later)

Future NBA Hall of Famer

Baller’s watching the councilors, trying to pick up on there mistakes.

Paul cant stand what he’s seeing, noooooooooo, stop the humiliation, the shame..oh the shame.

Air wick, making the difficult shot, while Gursheel puts a hand in his face…

Thank ‘yall for coming out, come back tomarrow, same ghetto gym, same ghetto hood, same ghetto time.

The highlight of the day, or the 20 mins that I was there was when Mugsy crossed out Mr. Chardi Kalaa, breaking his ankles in front of everyone there. Conveniently no CK camera’s where there to tape it.

Enjoying watching Mugsy dominate the floor, showing everyone why he belongs on the next And 1 Tour.

Lastly I spent my day working at my dads office, and I was surprised to see that the office is really starting to look like an office, a lot has changed since I was last in town, check out the completed lobby.

When I last left there where 3 ghetto chairs and an old coffee table that had a bunch of old Punjabi papers.
